Field tests of a new Russian-made bathometric cassette, purchased as part of the renewal of the Institute`s instrumentation base, were carried out at Lake Baikal.

The bathometric cassette is designed for water sampling to depths of 2000 metres and the installation of a set of hydrophysical meters.

Thanks to the digital control system, an automatic water sample is taken at a pre-set depth when the cassette is lowered or raised. According to the technical specifications of Limnological Institute, the manufacturer upgraded the bathometer cassette with a temperature meter and a bottom touch sensor, which allows bottom water sampling without disturbing bottom sediments. The small size and weight (90 kg) of the cassette will allow it to be used in scientific expeditions from small vessels as well as from the ice of the lake.
