Expedition on board the RV “Titov” from 22 to 26 May 2022

From 22 to 26 May 2022, a complex expedition on board of RV “Titov” was carried out within the program “Study of the impact of seasonal and long-term fluctuations in the level of Baikal on the biotic and abiotic compounds of the littoral zone of the lake and zones of mixing of the river and lake waters” (project № 0279-2021-0016) (Leader by A. Fedotov) in the near-mouth areas of four tributaries of Lake Baikal (the Selenga, Barguzin, Goloustnaya, Buguldeika Rivers). The staff of the Laboratory of Hydrochemistry and Atmosphere Chemistry (Tomberg I.V., Chebunina N.S., Lutskin E.S.), Laboratory of Aquatic Microbiology (Suslova M.Yu., Podlesnaya G.V.), Laboratory of Paleolimnology (Vorobyeva S.S., Dubrova K.S.), Laboratory of Hydrology and Hydrophysics (Blinov V.V.) participated in the expedition.

The expedition to study hydrophysical, hydrochemical and hydrobiological processes, which take place in the zones of mixing of the rivers and lake at a low- Baikal level.

According to a standard grid of the stations, the samples were collected from different horizons from the surface to the bottom with 5-liter bathometers. The water samples were collected for chemical analysis (рН, electric conductivity, oxygen, main ions, biogenic elements, and organic matter), microbial analysis, suspended matter, and species composition of phytoplankton. Besides, the samples of phytoplankton were collected by a Juday net (layer 0-25 m). In total, the fieldwork was carried out at 49 stations. The upper layers (100 m) at the stations were conducted using CTD-zond a JFE-Rinko with the sensors of temperature, electric conductivity, oxygen, turbidity, fluorescence, Ph, Eh, and PAR. The water surface temperature was recorded along the course of the RV.

Total count of samples:

  • hydrochemical analysis – 74
  • microbiological analysis – 47
  • phytoplankton – 47
  • suspended matter – 18
